A dedicated home for the literature, art, and history of the fantastical imagination.
Five galleries. Centuries of fantasy brought to life.
The National Fantasy Museum is a new kind of cultural institution — built around a simple belief: that fantasy literature, art, and storytelling deserve a dedicated home. Founded in Richmond, Virginia in 2026, we are beginning our journey as a traveling museum, bringing our exhibitions to communities across the country.
We are just getting started. Our mission is to celebrate the full history of fantasy — from the ancient myths that first lit fires in the dark, to the novels, films, and games carrying that flame into the present day. Every exhibition we build, every speaker we host, every apprenticeship we offer, is a step toward that permanent home.
“Fantasy is hardly an escape from reality. It's a way of understanding it.”
— Lloyd Alexander
Five exhibitions, each exploring a distinct world of the fantastical imagination.
What makes a story last the test of time — and what effect does fantasy have on the human mind from a psychological, neurological, and symbolic perspective? How do stories shape our worldviews, our mindset, and the choices we make in our day to day lives?
Portals, Passages & Parallel Worlds — A History of Literature's Greatest Gateways.
Where Horror Meets the Fantastical — A History of Fear, Darkness & the Uncanny.
